Thoughts Before Midnight

Suffering is relative, it’s only suffering when it happens to us. At all other times we can only watch in abject horror or cold indifference.

Empathy is meaningless. Words mean nothing when pain is supreme. That’s why there’s morphine, alcohol and percocet. Words can soothe only when pain is numbed.

It’s not death that bothers me. I do not fear the end. What pains me is pain itself. Why create a creature whose body can feel so damn much?

  1. Why create such a creature, indeed? Are the gods (or God?) mad, sadistic artists or scientists? Why make animals with needs, that suffer when those needs are not met, then create humans that can be conscious, or even resentful, of their suffering?

    Check this one out:

We cannot expect to truly feel each others feelings or to have others truly feel ours. We are encased forever in our own emotional, sensory world. However, the hallmark of civilization is the we do our best to empathize. And that we act on the well-founded assumption that most others are likely to have reactions akin to ours in given circumstances. Our duty is to prevent and relieve excessive suffering for ourselves and others when possible, while allowing that which is necessary for growth. Those determinations can only take place in the gray areas of individual judgment, and it must always be so.

The most difficult empathy to muster is for the judgments of others, which can be so radically different from our own. And for the other’s seeming lack of judgment.

And the arbitrary nature of it all is the ultimate frustration.

  2. “Why create a creature whose body can feel so damn much?”

Because that’s how we stay alive, by sensing, fearing and also empathizing. Evolution breeds on survival, it doesn’t need for us to be happy.

Although sometimes I think we are bred by some other agent, someone that likes what our tears taste like.
